The History Of HapKiDo
The seeds of HapKiDo are based on 32 traditional Korean Martial Arts, such as TaeKyn (kicks), Sirum (Japanese Style Sumo), SooBakDo (Hand Techniques) etc.
From Master Sang's perspective, HapKiDo's origin started with Master Ji Han Jae. Master Ji (pronounced Gee) came from 3 generations of Martial Arts, which have not been revealed to this date. It has been documented that Masted Ji studied AkiJuJitsu from Master Yong Sul Choi, which has created confusion that Master Yong is the true father of HapKiDo. It is true that HapKiDo utilizes joint manipulations yet it is only one aspect of the Art. In HapKiDo there are strikes, kick and hand techniques.
Master Ji is considered the founder of HapKiDo from our teachers persepective because of two major reasons:
- Master Sang has met both Master Ji and Master Yong with the conclusion that Master Yong was not practising HapKiDo
- Master Ji was the only person who taught KAL Technique and spin kicks. Prior to Master Ji, these two effective moves never existed; today the spin kick is seen in most Korean Martial Arts.
Therefore Master Sang believes that Ji Han Jae is the founder of HapKiDo with the first school opening in Seoul, Korea in 1956.
